Sunset Junction Festival Cancelation: Organizers Speak Out

On Wednesday, the Los Angeles Board of Public Works denied the Sunset Junction Music Festival's request for permits for this weekend's events. This second denial seems to be the end of the road for the event, which has been one of Los Angeles' most popular music festivals for more than 30 years.our editor recommendsSunset Junction Music Festival Canceled, Permit DeniedSunset Junction Organizers Issue Plea for Donations Amid Cancellation Concerns Now, the organizers of the event are telling their side of the story. When the organizers were denied their permits on Monday, they were instructed to come up with the money they owed the city from the previous years' festivals. The organizers scrambled to come up with the $142,000 requested, and eventually secured a significant donation from Live Nation. "Live Nation deeply understands the importance, the legacy and the great impact the fair has on the majority of the community, along with the artistic community," the statement said. STORY: Sunset Junction Music Festival Canceled, Permit Denied The statement goes on to explain that while the funds did arrive from Life Nation, there was not enough time for organizer Micheal McKinley to deposit them in the bank until Wednesday morning. Some media outlets reported that while there was proof of the funds, there were also some recent deposits that had not cleared yet. The statement also points out that the bill for last year's festival from the city totaling $267,000, seemed "inflated more than 10 times that of comparable LA festivals." STORY: Sunset Junction Organizers Issue Plea for Donations Amid Cancellation Concerns This year's music festival was slated to have six stages and over 100 acts including DJ sets by Peaches and Lil Jon and headlining performances by Butthole Surfers, Butch Walker, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Bobby Womack and Hanson. Read the complete release below: The requested city fees of $142,000 for the 2011 Sunset Junction Fair were secured from Live Nation ($100k) along with supporters, who stepped up on behalf of Sunset Junction in respect of their 31-year history. Sunset Junction legal was told by the Board of Public Works hearing on Monday, August 22 that they may re-consider issuing permits if Sunset Junction could provide them with this year's fees in advance, totaling $142,000 by Wednesday, August 24 at 12 noon. The majority in attendance on August 22 were in support of Sunset Junction. Live Nation deeply understands the importance, the legacy and the great impact the fair has on the majority of the community, along with the artistic community. The funds did arrive yesterday from Live Nation, however not in time for Sunset Junction organizer Micheal McKinley to deposit in the bank. The funds were deposited in the bank this morning (8/24) with a faxed receipt of proof sent over to the Board of Public Works. This is disputed in the media. Last year, one week prior to the 2010 Sunset Junction Fair, organizers were presented with a bill for $267,000 from the city. In prior years, these fees did not exist for the non-profit organization, which utilizes Sunset Junction as a fundraiser to help at risk youth embrace a better life choice. Sunset Junction repeatedly asked for an itemization of city fees and once they were received, found that the fees were inflated more than 10 times that of comparable LA festivals. They also found that the fees for the police seemed to be questionably inflated. This point was also brought up at Monday's hearing and addressed by Commissioner Valerie Lynne Shaw. The official answer by a police representative when asked about the discrepancy in charges from one year to the next, was there "was a change in policy". Sunset Junction has every intention of paying the city fees that it justifiably owes; the non-profit simply asks for a fair and just accounting that is comparable to other citywide events. Sunset Junction was fortunate and grateful to have Live Nation step-up to support them at the 11th hour. This is not a regular occurrence during these harsh economic times and prior years of recession, and therefore Sunset Junction should not be faulted for not being able to previously deliver funds. It is a testament to Live Nation for having the passion, heart and soul to save the special magic of Sunset Junction for all the fans, the community, the artistic community, the at risk youth and everyone else here who loses as a result. Since he's knee-deep in production in Detroit, Raimi could only send a relevant video message towards the Disney convention in the group of Oz The Truly Amazing and Effective. But he also provided an earlier peek at exactly what the film might seem like, with concept art and rough footage in the first day's shooting interspersed with seem bites in the cast, including James Franco, Mila Kunis, Michelle Williams, Zach Braff and Rachel Weisz. As Raimi pointed out within the video, the goal for that film is to accept explanations of Oz utilized by L Frank Baum within the Wonderful Wizard of Oz and produce these phones existence with the technological methods of contemporary filmmaking. Therefore we were treated to lush imagery of moving hillsides, mountain tops that was similar to elephant heads and frightening forests, all boasting the legendary yellow brick road. Even though hardly any is really within the can, there is a fast peek at Franco plying his trade like a dodgy circus magician, a guy that has a watch for that ladies. "He's small disadvantage, a little of the Lothario along with a seducer," Franco describes within the video. "When he reaches Oz, it's an opportunity to redeem themself. One quick shot of Franco planning to take on bad weather using the words "Let us go have miracle" wrapped some misconception. Naturally, it is too soon to inform exactly what the final product may be like, or how effective it will likely be, but there certainly appeared to become a large amount of ambition displayed...

Brian De Palma Unlocks The Key Man

He's on to direct the thrillerThough it seems like Brian De Palma's name is attached to lots of projects, all of them have so far stayed lingering in development hell and he hasn't actually made a film since 2007's Redacted. But QED International will be hoping he changes that with The Key Man. Penned by Awake scribe Joby Harold, the script finds a single father on the run from US government types because his body happens to contain the answers to some vital national secrets. We hate it when that happens. According to Deadline, the eventual film is planned as a throwback to '70s paranoia thrillers such as Marathon Man and Three Days of the Condor, which is something De Palma should be able to pull off with aplomb. Assuming, of course, that it gets made. While Open Road Films have picked it up for distribution and it's mentioned as heading before the cameras by the end of the year, we've heard that before with De Palma films. His most recent acquisition, the remake of French drama Crime d'amour (re-titled as Passion), was supposed to be shooting right now but it's still waiting to happen. And let's not even talk about his long-gestating psycho thriller Toyer...

The Man Who Peed With Fire: Watch Trailer for Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance

Nothing edifies the soul like an endless barrage of CGi fire. Remember when you’d come home from school in your wool cap, set your knapsack down in the chilly den, and Mother would crank up computer-animated flames in the plasma-screen hearth? Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance understands and would like to add a few more soul-tickling items to your precious memories: Nicolas Cage’s terrifying gaze, leather jackets, and fire pee. Serious. Well. Forget that Nicolas Cage and his leathery ensemble/aflame chopper look like an emblem on an expensive bowling ball; let’s discuss the pee-pee pyro. There at the end. You may assume the movie is going for somewhat sincere thrills early on — especially when Cage is breathing fire like Dhalsim from Street Fighter II — so the America’s Funniest Home Videos piss hilarity might not fit on first glance. Then you remember that Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance comes from Crank impresarios Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor, and it sorta makes sense. How an Oscar-winner and relative to the Coppola family fits here, however, does not. This is a “Don’t ask questions” sort of trailer, though, so move on. Frankly, every once in awhile, it’s fun to see a Hot Topic t-shirt skull come to life and spew CGi majesty, no? I’m guessing this is the Sex and the City 2 of fiery skull pictures — utterly self-indulgent, maddeningly stupid, and kickass to watch drunk. I am THERE. VERDICT: Captain Corelli’s Piddlin’ Watch the trailer in HD (highly recommended) over at Apple.

The 6’7” Smith, born in Texas in 1945, started out as an All-American athlete at Michigan State University, where he took out rival quarterback Terry Hanratty in the 1966 Notre Dame-Michigan State “Game of the Century;” selected by Baltimore as the number one draft pick in 1967, Smith went on to play for the Baltimore Colts, the Oakland Raiders, and the Houston Oilers before transitioning into an acting career in the ’70s. Russell Brand Could Join Lamb Of God

Diablo Cody's directorial debutA couple of months ago, it was reported that Diablo Cody - still best known for writing the likes of Juno, Jennifer's Body and the upcoming Young Adult - is making the leap to directing on her next script, religious comedy drama Lamb of God. Now comes word via Twitch that Russell Brand has been offered one of the lead roles. Lamb finds a young conservative religious woman who loses her faith following a brain crash. Attempting to recover from serious burns, she decides to head to Vegas and indulge in the sinful life she's been warned against all her life. But even as she does so, she finds that she's set on a path back to her beliefs. The gang over at The Playlist has read the script and dug out a few more details, including the fact that the girl befriends both a craps dealer and a bartender named William, which is the role that Brand has now been offered. So far, there's no information on who might take the lead, though there are rumours that Julianne Hough - last seen in Burlesque and about to show up in the remake of Footloose - is a front-runner. If Hough did nab the role, it would mark a reunion with Brand, since he's part of the Rock of Ages cast that also includes Hough. Brand could certainly use a solid acting role and a hit after a bit of a rollercoaster year that has seen him successful (if largely off-screen) in Hop and stumble with Arthur. And while Lamb is likely to be controversial, it could be a smart move....
